What Are Sugar Snap Peas?

Sugar Snap Peas are a type of vegetable in the legume family and legumes are a type of edible seed which grows inside a pod. You may be familiar with other types of legumes like snow peas and even peanuts. These pods are further distinguishable by the seam that runs (vertically) the length of the pod and can be torn open to access the seed.

Sugar Snap Peas vs Snow Peas

Though both Snap Peas and Snow Peas are legumes and come from the same family of species, there are some slight differences. Snow Peas, often referred to as the Chinese Pea Pod, have a much flatter body and contain considerably smaller peas inside. Snap Peas on the other hand have a thicker wall and a larger (rounder) pea. Additionally, they are a bit sweeter.

What Do They Taste Like?

They are sweet with a slightly grassy and earthy flavor.

How To Cook Sugar Snap Peas

They can be added to a stir fry or even tossed into salads. However, I find that the best way to cook them so that they can be served as a single item side dish or appetizer is to sauté them in garlic and butter. Here are a brief set of how-to steps. For complete details, please see my Sugar Snap Peas Recipe.

  1. Sauté. Heat butter and oil in a skillet over medium-high heat. Add in peas and cook for about 3 minutes, stirring frequently until they become slightly tender.
  2. Add in garlic. Reduce heat to medium. Add in minced garlic and cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  3. Add lemon, pepper, and salt. Remove pan from heat and add in lemon juice, zest, salt, and pepper, stir to combine.

Sugar Snap Peas Nutrition

Peas are an excellent source of antioxidants like vitamin C, flavonoids, and carotenoids. Antioxidants, like vitamin C, are beneficial for heart health. They are also an excellent source of vitamin K which promotes bone health. Finally, peas in general are a rich source of fiber. (1)(2)
