Why We Love This Recipe
- So easy to make! Salsa, while simple, has not always been easy for me to make. I have an aunt who is from Mexico and she always made the best salsa. Whenever my family would visit her she would leave the couch after pleasantries were exchanged, disappear into the kitchen, and come back out with this amazing salsa that was both delicious and yet secretive. It spoke of spices unheard of and methods of cooking little-known. That’s why, throughout my cooking adventures, I always stayed away from salsa because I considered it an unreachable culinary fruit. Not anymore! Serrano Salsa is both an Easy Homemade Salsa and the flavors are fitting of anything you’d find at a quality authentic Mexican restaurant. But let’s talk about the ease with which this Serrano Salsa recipe comes together. You, my friend, aren’t going to break a sweat: you’re going to slice an onion into quarters, chop up some cilantro, boil some tomatoes and Serrano, and then sit back while your blender does the rest. I can’t wait for you to say to yourself “Fresh Homemade Salsa isn’t that hard to make!”
- Authentic flavors, so delicious! Let’s talk first about the consistency of this Serrano Salsa. It’s thick yet spreads out nicely over the surface of a chip. The spice? It’s appropriate and right down the middle; you won’t have some guests smiling while others struggle desperately for a carton of milk like pepper-spray victims. The flavors? Nothing stands out, but like a perfect band they play together in harmony. However, I would say that the serrano pepper and cumin seem to be the signature marks for this recipe’s truly authentic taste. Please try our Serrano Salsa recipe and let us know what you think!
- It’s healthy! Here are some of the main ingredients of our Serrano Pepper Salsa Recipe and a few of their health benefits.
A Short History of Salsa
Salsa, the Spanish word for “Sauce”, has been made and consumed by Aztecs, Incas, and Mayans since time immemorial. This wonderful culinary invention only became mainstream after the Spaniards conquered Mexico during the 1500s. It wasn’t until 1571 that it was assigned the name “salsa” by a priest named Alonso de Molina. I’m not sure what else this priest did during his career, but if I had to write his resume I’d do this: 1571 – Priest; Duties: named salsa. Then I’d sit back coolly during any job interview and say “are we done here? I can start tomorrow”.

How To Make Serrano Salsa
- Boil tomatoes and pepper. Place tomatoes and Serrano pepper in a pot of water and boil at medium-high heat for 15 minutes.
- Prepare ingredients. Slice red onion into quarters. Squeeze and measure lime juice into a small bowl, peel garlic, chop and measure cilantro.
- Food processor. Combine all ingredients into a food processor and blend well until smooth.
Difference Between Jalapeno and Serrano Peppers
The flavor between the two is very similar but the main difference is that Serrano peppers are roughly 5 times as hot as Jalapenos. So, I guess you might want to think twice before throwing a second pepper in the blender unless you’re using salsa as a weapon.
How Long Will Salsa Last In The Fridge?
If you don’t eat it all in one sitting (like me) then Serrano Salsa should last in the fridge for at least a week if you keep it in a sealed container.
Tips
- Fresh ingredients. Except for the canned tomatoes and spices, use only fresh ingredients.
- Chill out! I know you are probably going to be tempted to start dipping immediately after you make this Fresh Homemade Salsa. However, let the salsa have at least an hour to chill in the fridge before you ravenously descend upon it. Also, it’s even better if you let it sit overnight. Respect the salsa!
