Duritos, also called Mexican Pinwheels or Chicharrones de Harina, are a popular Mexican snack. These light and crunchy puffs are the perfect treat. They cook up in literally seconds and they’re delicious when sprinkled with lime juice, chili powder, and salt.
What Are Duritos?
First, Duritos go by many names; they’re called Mexican Pinwheels, Chicharrones de Harina, and also Duros. Whatever you want to call them, they’re essentially as popular in Mexico as potato chips are in the U.S. Though Duritos are crunchy like a chip, they’re actually a form of pasta. However, they’re eaten as a snack. Additionally, Chicharrones de Harina are commonly sold by street vendors in Mexico and are even a home staple in many Mexican homes. They are cooked in hot oil and expand from the tiny wheels you see in the photo below to a large and puffy wheel roughly 2 inches wide. They are light and crunchy and are frequently eaten topped with a seasoning and dipped in hot sauce.
Mexican Pinwheels Recipe
- Duritos – The ones I purchased were made by the brand Tampico and they were good!
- Vegetable oil
- Seasoning – Chili powder, salt, cayenne pepper.
- Lime juice
How To Make Duritos
- Add oil to a large pot and heat over medium-high.
- Once the oil is heated up, add a single durito to the oil as a test. It should expand quickly and fully.
- Add a handful of duritos to the pot and, as they are expanding, move them around with a wooden spoon to make sure they get cooked evenly.
- Remove fully cooked duritos from the oil using a skimmer or slotted spoon.
- Place duritos on a plate lined with paper towels to drain off excess oil and let cool.
- While duritos are cooling sprinkle with seasoning of choice.
Where Can I Buy Duritos?
These Mexican Pinwheels can be found at some general supermarkets. However, you’ll have the best luck finding them at a Mexican market. Finally, you can purchase them online through Amazon. However, just make sure you purchase from a reputable brand like Tampico.
Storing Suggestions
You can store this wonderful snack in large ziplock bags or any airtight container and they will keep for up to a few days. Additionally, make sure you store them in a cool dark place so they are not exposed to light or heat.
