This easy Blueberry Sauce Recipe comes together in minutes and it’s perfect drizzled over pancakes or French toast. Made with fresh blueberries, lemon juice, lemon zest, and pure maple syrup, this delicious sauce will be a favorite at your breakfast table.
I’m a big breakfast guy and this Recipe for Blueberry Sauce has only solidified the fact. This isn’t anything like the sugary blueberry sauces you’ll find at your local pancake house. Nope, this sauce has texture (from the fresh berries) and a flavor that carries a bit of tang (lemon juice) and fresh berry sweetness.
One of the standout moments in making this recipe was the aroma from the cooking berries; based on smell alone, I knew this was going to be an amazing recipe. I can’t wait for you to try it yourself. Don’t forget to stick your face over the cooking berries and drink it in. Remember, the journey is always a big part of the reward.
Not that I ever bought blueberry syrup before, I’ll never consider it now that I know how easy it is to make this sauce. You’re working with only 3 ingredients in this simple recipe and cook time is only 10 minutes. It doesn’t get much easier than that. Now, let’s talk about how to make it!
Blueberry Sauce Recipe
- Blueberries. Fresh blueberries work best for this recipe. However, frozen would also work if you’re in a rush.
- Maple syrup. I love using maple syrup as a substitute for sugar because it’s healthier than refined sugar. Try to buy pure maple syrup because it’s simply boiled down maple tree sap whereas traditional pancake-style maple syrup is made with other (unhealthy) ingredients such as corn starch.
- Lemon zest. The best way to zest a lemon is by using a microplane grater. A microplane is a long, thin, handheld grater. Otherwise you can use a traditional grater or even a knife to cut away the zest and then mince it into smaller pieces.
- Lemon juice. Use fresh squeezed lemon juice only for this recipe.
How to Make Blueberry Sauce
- Coat pot with oil. We don’t want the maple syrup and berries to begin sticking to the pan, so lightly coat the bottom of a medium-sized pot with either olive, avocado, or coconut oil.
- Cook berries. Add fresh blueberries, lemon zest, lemon juice, and maple syrup to the pot and cook over medium-low heat for 10 minutes until berries begin to break down, emit juice, and soften.
- Let cool. Remove pot from heat and set aside to cool for a few minutes.
- Serve. You can either serve this sauce warm immediately or pour it into sealed mason jars for storing in the refrigerator.
Recipe Tips
The most important aspect of making this recipe is to be careful not to overcook the berries. You want to slowly cook the berries so all the juice comes out and doesn’t evaporate; so, make sure you do this over medium-low heat. I also used a bit of olive oil at the bottom of the pot to make sure the berries and maple syrup don’t stick. You won’t be able to taste the olive oil if you lightly brush it onto the bottom of the pot. You can also use avocado or coconut oil.
Variations
I have to say that I would probably not change anything about this recipe. However, feel free to use strawberries or blackberries instead of blueberries. Pretty much any berry works great in this recipe.
What Is Blueberry Sauce Used For?
As your guinea pig, I’ve tested this sauce on a good many breakfast recipes and it works on almost everything. This sauce is a must for pancakes, waffles, and French toast. It also works well as a toast spread; check out our Blueberry Toast recipe! It’s also a great topping on yogurts and oatmeal. And, probably my favorite, it works great as a topping for ice cream!
Finally, the best use of Blueberry Sauce may be as a topping for my Churro Chips recipe!
Is Blueberry Sauce Healthy?
The way I’ve made this recipe, yes, it’s healthy. I use only fresh berries and lemon. Pure maple syrup is also a healthy substitute for sugar. Most recipes you’ll find use sugar which is really not necessary since maple syrup is such a great (and healthier substitute). That said, let’s take a look at some of the health benefits of blueberries, lemon, and pure maple syrup.
Blueberries, though small, are packed with nutrients; they are high in fiber, vitamin C, vitamin K, and manganese. Compared with other fruits, blueberries are believed to be top-of-the-list for antioxidant properties. One study revealed blueberries to be beneficial for heart health, specifically the regulation of bad cholesterol. Similarly, lemons are also high in fiber, vitamin C, and are believed to be beneficial for heart health. Finally, maple syrup, if consumed in small amounts, is healthier than refined sugar because it contains essential nutrients like zinc and manganese. However, even pure maple syrup has high amounts of sugar so consume sparingly. (1)(2)(3)

Notes
Recipe tip
When cooking the berries be careful not to overcook them. Make sure you cook over medium-low heat so that the berry juice doesn't evaporate. I also added a small amount of oil to the pot so the berries and maple syrup don't stick to the bottom of the pan; you can use either coconut, olive, or avocado oil for this. In small amounts you won't taste it in the Blueberry Sauce.
Use fresh blueberries and fresh lemon for this recipe as it will enhance the flavor. However, you can also use frozen blueberries if you're in a pinch.
Recipe variations
Feel free to experiment with different berries or combinations of berries for this recipe; strawberries, blackberries, and raspberries would work well also.
